New Arrival
"Only in Stanley, Wisconsin"

By Betty Plombon, lifelong Stanley resident and museum director

-
Why were there two Catholic churches in a town of 2,500?
-
What did Father Byrne have to say about saloons and alcohol?
-
Was there really a law against attending a movie on Sundays?
-
What caused the busiest years for police and the justice system during Prohibition?
-
Could the KKK really have been organized here?
In the early 1900s, Stanley was at war with residents, fighting against one another, creating havoc and hatred in a town of 2,500. It was a war of nationalities, church against church, drinking versus nondrinking, and the invasion of the KKK against Catholics. Then one fateful day, a figure arrived in Stanley, forever altering Stanley's path.
